Digital twin was a common theme as Siemens unveiled its three latest motion control offerings from its Sinamics drive portfolio at the Automate 2023 trade show and conference in Detroit in May—the Sinamics S200 servo, the Sinamics S210 next generation servo-drive system and the Sinamics G220 multi-purpose adjustable speed drive. Siemens’ Sinamics DriveSim Basic model enables users to create a digital twin of drive and PLC communication in the project planning phase to ensure proper sizing and operation of the equipment in use.

All three of these drives include an embedded web-server or Startdrive software, which is integrated into the Siemens TIA Portal. All three units are built with global operation in mind, with universal standards and certification compliance. These new drives also all come with integrated security for enhanced communication, integrity and authenticity checks to protect against tampered parameters, in addition to the User Management and Access Control (UMAC) function within Siemen’s TIA Portal.

The Sinamics S200 servo for the stand-alone and networked machine market has a Sinamics S200 drive and Simotics S-1FL2 motor with standard or flexible cable options. Its pulse train version allows a wide range of installed machines to integrate additional positioning axis using the onboard positioner, while the Simatic PLC expands its system capabilities in the Profinet version. With a power range up to 7kW including low, medium and high-inertia options, its 1FL2 permanent magnet motors with 17- or 21-bit encoders help it perform in a wide range of standard servo applications.

The electronic type plate on the 1FL2 motor and one-button tunning make setup easy while the integrated brake resistor and holding brake control add to its functionality. 3C2 coated circuit boards and IP65 motors with metal connection and built-in under-voltage protection increases durability.

The Sinamics S210 servo-drive system is a digitally native drive with range of corresponding motors and gearboxes for mid-range operation to stand-alone and multi-axis machines requiring discontinuous motion control for moving, processing and positioning. It’s stainless-steel motor and planetary gearbox options fit requirments for both food and beverage and pharma sectors.

DC link coupling on 3-phase units increase power efficiency on multi-axis applications. Corresponding Simotics synchronous motors feature high-resolution 22- or 26-bit absolute encoders, single or multi-turn. One-cable connectivity is standard and all motors feature IP64, IP65, IP67 or IP69X protection. An integrated EMC filter and braking resistor reduce setup requirements and the Siemens Analyze MyDrives app allows machine users to monitor key conditions for advanced anomaly detection. These new servo-drives are paired with Siemens‘ Simatic S7-1500 PLC or ET200 SP open controller and various Simotics servomotor and planetary gearbox designs. Increased engineering efficiencies are gained with the TIA Selection Tool for optimized system selection and programming. The Sinamics S210 offers machine users up to SIL3 protection across an extended range of safety integrated functions including safe stopping and safe limited speed or direction. Menu-guided safety acceptance testing assures proper operation and safety validation.

The Sinamics G220 high-performance multi-purpose adjustable speed drive—the first drive to join the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio—has built-in Clean Power technology, which reduces harmonics by up to 97 percent without an AC line reactor or DC choke. Its integrated web-server eliminates the need to install software or an app on a PC or mobile device. These new drives are equipped with an IIoT module for Cloud and Edge applications, which increases the transparency of the applications and allows remote monitoring and accessibility of the drive system.

A range of modular and flexible hardware and software options, as well as safety integrated functions, can be adapted to user-specific application requirements. It’s available in UL Type 12 (IP55) wall-mount design and a conformal coating option is available for harsh environments and corrosive gases such as hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide or amonia.
