Outsourcing Replacement Parts to the Customer

Geeta Dayal of Wired Magazine has written a piece profiling Teenage Engineering’s move to outsource replacement parts to its users.

If you’ve ever used a synthesizer before, or any musical instrument for that matter, you know that the buttons, knobs, and wheels on an instrument tend to break after heavy use.  That predicament leaves you to scour the Internet looking for replacements. Unlike making music, waiting a week or more for a tiny piece of plastics is no fun at all.

Well, Teenage Engineering wants to see that wait time, and the dissatisfaction that comes with it, disappear. In a move that’s long been predicted by evangelists in the 3D printing community, Teenage Engineering has put replacement part files for their OP-1 synth up on Shapeways for users to download and print themselves.

Daunne Scott sums up Teenage Engineering’s move, "I have been researching the area for several years now, and this is the first time I have seen an electronics company give away the files for a product they would otherwise sell."
