PopSLATE is an innovative iPhone 5 case just out on the crowd funding site Indiegogo. At a first glance, it looks like a standard plastic iPhone case, but it offers a lot more than protection!
A 4-inch black and white E-ink display embedded on the back of the case adds a second screen that displays content, websites and pictures directly from your iPhone. Take a look at the video demonstration below to see how it works with the PopSLATE app.
The PopSLATE uses iPhone’s lightning connector for both power and data exchange with the phone. A micro-USB charging port passes a charge to your phone so you don't have to take the cover off. The E-Ink screen uses negligible power from the phone. This allows you to display static images on the screen for a long time without re-charging.
Having a second screen like popSLATE could have several benefits. For example, with an extra E-ink screen running Amazon Kindle, you could read books and websites with your iPhone under direct sunlight, which is nearly impossible on your iPhone’s main screen. Or you could decorate your iPhone with custom cool skins created by displaying your favorite black and white pictures or even dynamic slideshows on the popSLATE.
If you’re worried about durability, the developers say that the screen is laminated into a plastic substrate that’s ‘nearly indestructible’.
