Audi and the Future of Cars

The past year has seen a lot of news about driverless cars. At CES, Audi jumped into the fray, announcing that “piloted driving will be technically feasible before the decade is out.”

In the video below, Annie Lien, a senior engineer at the Volkswagon Group’s Electronic Research Lab, describes a future where cars can park themselves and then return to their owner unassisted, all at the touch of a button.

Audi also debuted a conceptual lighting scheme named “The Swarm.” Essentially a full panel OLED system, The Swarm might one day transform the exteriors of Audi’s cars into dynamic communication systems.

Imagine a fleet of cars, networked to each other and able to communicate any type of information to their passengers. Now, imagine that all those passengers have to do is sit there while the car drives itself. What kind of information would you want displayed on the cars around you? Would you use their Swarm systems to do some shopping? Read the paper? Watch a movie?

If Audi’s technology spreads far enough, long distance road trips might even become something to be enjoyed rather than just tolerated!
