Today satellites aren't built to be reused or re-purposed once they've been decommissioned. But DARPA’s Phoenix Project is working to fix that. The goal of the project: “to develop and demonstrate technologies to cooperatively harvest and re-use valuable components from retired, nonworking satellites in GEO and demonstrate the ability to create new space systems at greatly reduced cost.”
