US Senator Wants Legislation to Make 3D Printed Guns Illegal

Fresh on the heels of Defense Distributed’s announcement and release of their fullyfunctional 3D printed handgun, “The Liberator,” Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York has called for legislation to make the weapon illegal.

At a press conference in his Manhattan office this morning, Sen. Schumer stated, "A terrorist, someone who's mentally ill, a spousal abuser, a felon can essentially open a gun factory in their garage”.

Senator Schumer did want to be clear that he does not oppose 3D printing technology as a whole, insisting that 3D printing is “an extraordinary technology… [but] there are a number of actors looking to use it for scary purposes. And that's what we have to stop.”

Regardless of the senator’s intentions, little is likely to be done to stop the proliferation of Defense Distributed’s handgun. Not only is the distributed and open nature of the project difficult, if not impossible, to control, the US congress recently failed to pass legislation setting up a background check system for gun purchases.
