MakerBot to be Acquired?

In a recent article over at the Wall Street Journal, sources state that 3D printing startup MakerBot is mulling over the possibility of being acquired.

In the last few years MakerBot, which is headed by 3D printing evangelist Bre Pettis, has been making remarkable advances in the development of its 3D printing technology. Currently, the company sells three different 3D printer models, the Replicator, the Replicator 2, and the Replicator 2X. Since its debut in September of 2012, the Replicator 2 has gobbled up a vast portion of the desktop 3D printing market and has made MakerBot an attractive option for investors.

According to the Wall Street Journal, "The four-year-old startup was recently gauging its options for raising a new round of venture capital at a valuation of $300 million when the discussions led to interest from possible acquirers, people familiar with the matter said."

As of now it’s unclear if MakerBot prefers to be acquired, or if they’d rather go ahead with the new round of funding.  No matter which option the company chooses, it’s likely to send shockwaves through the “Maker” sector of the 3D printing industry.
