Designer Edge Image of the Day – 6-17-13 – Recharge Your Car in 20 Minutes

A new  charger design, developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), uses DC power to give an electric vehicle (EV) an 80% charge in 20 minutes.  Comprised of a standardized connector, and a DC fast charge system the new charger is a step along the way to wider EV adoption.

According to Britta Gross, GM’s director of advanced vehicle commercialization, “The DC Combo quick charger changes the game… Imagine stopping off for a cup of coffee, plugging in your vehicle at the fast charge station outside, run in for your cup of coffee, 10 minutes, 20 minutes later, you have a fully charged vehicle.”

Couple this news with Tesla Motors announcing that their Supercharger Stations will cover 98% of the US by 2015 and it seems like EVs might gobble up a greater portion of the auto market faster than expected.

If the auto manufacturers can only reduce the cost of these machines the electric car revolution might arrive sooner than we think.
