Designer Edge Image of the Day – 6-20-13 – Hot Air Powered Helicopter

Belgian startup Sagita is looking to redesign the helicopter by making is significantly more efficient.  Key to this redesign is the engine that powers the company’s Sherpa helicopter.

Unlike traditional helicopters the Sherpa’s main rotor is driven by an engine that is powered by hot air generated by the helicopter’s power plant. According to Sagita this new engine makes the Sherpa about 85% efficient and eliminates the need for a rear rotor.

Sugita believe that their Sherpa will be available in about two years and expects it will cost some $200,000.
