3D Systems Buys Metal Printer

Just under a month ago 3D systems announced that it would be acquiring the French Direct Metal Selective Laser Sintering (DMSLS) firm Phenix. Well, this morning 3D Systems has announced that it closed the acquisition of the Riom based company, paying a reported $15.1M for 81%.

Since its founding in 2000, Phenix Systems has designed and manufactured “proprietary Direct Metal 3D Printers that print chemically pure, fully dense metal and ceramic parts from very fine powders with the granularity of 6 to 9 microns.”

According to the company’s website, Phenix’s printers can manufacture components in a litany of materials including stainless steel, tool steel, super alloys, non-ferrous alloys, precious metals and alumina for various aerospace, automotive and medical device applications.

According to Avi Reichental, President and CEO of 3D Systems, “Phenix Systems is a strategic and differentiated addition to our extensive 3D content-to-print portfolio and we are thrilled to deliver these powerful solutions to our customers”.

With this acquisition 3D systems continues its explosive growth in a quickly growing market. Recently, Forbes magazine listed the company 4^th on its “Fast 25” list, a prestigious gathering of the world’s hottest tech companies. At this rate I wouldn’t be surprised if 3D Systems took over first place next year.
