The final webinar on Overcoming FEA Roadblocks is about turning all those numbers crunched by the solver into something that is human readable and understandable.  The three major roadblocks discussed in this webinar include:

  • Managing large amounts of data,
  • Limited tools to visualize data, and
  • Limited ability to manipulate data.

Managing Data

To overcome the vast amounts of simulation data, a post-processor needs to be able to work with the file system or managed environment and use only the data required for visualization and results consumption.  Even with gigabyte network infrastructure, moving terabyte size results files takes longer than most analysts care to wait for.

Therefore, the post-processor needs to be able to break apart the results database into manageable components that can be opened, viewed, and combined as necessary by the user.  Sometimes the results need to remain in one large database; other times the results need to be separated and then externally referenced.  A post-processor that can manage multiple sources can overcome this obstacle.

Visualization Tools

Having the simulation converge on a result is one thing, making those results human readable is another.  To be able to see the results of the simulation, suitable graphics must be employed.  Do you want to see the heat transfer progress through a thermodynamic analysis?  Do you need to see part deflection while highlighting areas of high Von Mises stress?  These combinations of results, both static and animated, are basic necessities to understand the results of the simulation.  Cutting planes for internal stress, shear and bending moment diagrams, and exporting images in order to document the results are also necessary visualization tools.  Does your post processor have the tools necessary for you to completely understand the results of your simulation?

Data Manipulation

Often the data as calculated by the solver is not enough, further manipulation (extrapolation or calculation) is required to obtain the desired information at the part of the model that’s under scrutiny.

Postprocessing capabilities are required that allow for speed, comprehension, and communication with 3rd party applications.
