Designer Edge Image of the Day – Oblivion's UI Interfaces

Since their first screenings movies have helped engineers, designers and futurists visualize a future that could lie just ahead. Well, one of this summer’s sci-fi blockbusters, Oblivion, is doing just that with the spectacular UI designs that are centerpiece of the films aesthetic.

Created by visual effects designer Bradley G. Munkowitz and his team at GMUNK the designs for the film’s interfaces were created “to reflect the modernized sensibilities of the TET Mainframe computer and would assist the characters with the key components of their duties on earth; be it the monitoring of all Vitals on the ground using Vika's Light Table, or the various diagnostics in the air using the Jack's Bubbleship".

Stunning, and elegantly rendered, Oblivion’s UI designs are seamlessly woven into the fabric of the movie and will hopefully inspire a new generation of programmers and engineers to develop systems with this model in mind. Lets just hope a dystopian future doesn’t come as part of the deal.
