While we’ve known that NASA is planning at least one trip to an asteroid in the near future, what we haven’t known is exactly what that mission would look like. To remedy that problem NASA has released a stunning new animation detailing how a manned asteroid recovery mission would work.
This past July NASA undertook an asteroid mission formulation review “which brought together agency leaders from across the country to examine internal studies proposing multiple concepts and alternatives for each phase of the mission, and assessed technical and programmatic aspects of the mission.” With 400 ideas submitted by leaders from industry to academy in its pocket, NASA will now undertake host a technical workshop at the end of September to assess which of these idea could incorporated into a future mission.
