Instrumentation for Everyone

The engineering team at Red Pitaya wants to give your mobile device the power of a research lab.

The Red Pitaya system is currently in the Kickstarter fundraising stage, and has already raised more than double the initial $50,000 goal.

The device itself contains a dual core ARM cortex processor, 1 Gb of RAM, a signal processor and input and output connections. Also included are a USB port, 16 pin FPGA connector, and a daisy chain connector.

Using the Red Pitaya gives the same functions as an oscilloscope, waveform generator, frequency response analyzer, and a spectrum analyzer. The tool itself is new and exciting, but the open-source system built around the tool opens a new set of opportunities.

The Bazaar is the marketplace for applications where any web browser or tablet can download new abilities with a single click. The Backyard section contains the tools for developing new applications so users can steer the device to their own specific needs. The Spark Center is the idea space where users can brainstorm future uses and test developmental ideas.

Makers, students, educators, researchers, and start-ups should all be able to benefit from this technology. The device should also be immediately useful to current industry as a low-cost alternative when upgrading or opening new locations.
