Tokyo Olympics’ National Stadium

Early this week Tokyo was selected as the host city for the 2020 Olympic Games. While a number of factors went into the IOC’s decision to award the Games to Tokyo, the proposed National Stadium surely helped sway the jury’s decision.

Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the 80,000-seat National Stadium will be the main sporting venue for the Games and will host the football, rugby, track and field as well as both the opening and closing ceremonies.

According to Zaha Hadid, “"The stadium will become an integral part of Tokyo's urban fabric, directly engaging with the surrounding cityscape to connect and carve the elegant forms of the design". Hadid continued, “"Our three decades of research into Japanese architecture and urbanism is evident in our winning design and we greatly look forward to building the new National Stadium".
