The New York City Department of Environmental Protection will receive the “The UV Engineering Project of the Year Award” presented by the International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA).
This award was presented in recognition of the Catskill-Delaware Ultraviolet Disinfection Facility. This facility is able to process over 2 billion gal of water every day. Additionally, it is estimated that this system will cost much less than a filtration plant, and will increasing public health.
This therefore represents the world’s largest water processing facility. This required the Catskill-Delaware plant to use the largest UV lighting system ever made. The Trojan Technologies UV system includes 56 UV units that are each able to disinfect 60-mgd. The UV lights kill microbes by photo-chemically damaging the nucleic acids.
The project was a joint venture with engineering firms CDM Smith, and Hazen and Sawyer who will also share in the award.
Executive IUVA director Deb Martinez says “Every two years, the leaders of the ultraviolet industry come together to discuss the latest developments in the technology and to honor the best from among their ranks. This award to the New York City Department of Environmental Protection is one of IUVA’s highest awards.”
