In preparation for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar the first of 9 proposed stadium designs has been announced.
Designed by Iraqi-born architect Zaha Hadid, the Al Wakrah Stadium's flowing design is reminiscent of the sails of dhow pearl fishing boats that were once spread across the Indian Ocean and Arbian Sea.
At full capacity the stadium will be capable of seating 40,000 spectators, but it's modular design will allow it to be reconfigured for smaller audiences once the World Cup has left the tiny emirate. While its one-size fits all design is a standout feature for the stadium, it’s the structures ability to protect its guests from Qatar’s 50°C (122ºF) summer highs that really amazes. Using a unique curved shape for its roof and massive air conditioning systems for the indoor areas of the stadium, Hadid’s Al Wakrah facility should keep temperatures closer to 30°C (86ºF).
