Based around a mobile app, KeyMe allows you to scan and store digital copies of your keys in the cloud by simply opening the app and hitting “Scan a New Key”. Once a digital copy of your key is uploaded to the cloud you can create duplicates at a moment’s notice. What’s more, if you live in Manhattan you can have your key delivered right to your door within an hour of ordering.
While KeyMe’s scanning technology and delivery service is pretty cool, what really caught my eye was the company’s new partnership with Shapeways. Through the partnership, KeyMe will allow users to print a copy of their key in plastic, brass or gold with prints running from $10-$4,000 respectively.
If you’re one for customization, KeyMe will also let you add designs to the top of your key ranging from a functional bottle opener to an easily identifiable selfie. Given my penchant for the finer things in life I believe I’d have to go for a gold bottle opener key ... I can’t think of any better way to open up a bottle o’suds.
While the KeyMe service seems pretty interesting, it still won’t help me find my lost keys. But it has inspired me to create another spare, and that’s a pretty good start.
