USTechVets.org is Connecting Veterans with a Post Service Career

On Wednesday, Monster.com and various other US Technology Industry Trade Association leaders announced the launch of USTechVets.org (USTV) at the 2014 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

USTV is an online community focused on facilitating the hiring of their membership into civilian technology-based employment. With membership at around one million veterans, that is not an easy task.

With sponsorship from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), Monster Worldwide, Monster.com, the Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC), and various others, I have no doubt that the new site is up to the challenge. Especially since this partnership will produce the biggest pool of veteran candidates and veteran tech jobs in the world.

“Veterans bring valuable skills and experience to the job, such as leadership, team-building, motivation, a strong work ethic, and quick-thinking as well as experience working in a mission-focused environment. These qualities are highly-prized in the technology sector. We understand that a workforce with these outstanding merits can be an incredible competitive advantage in the marketplace. More, veterans have served our nation. It’s our duty to give back to them,” said CEA CEO Gary Shapiro.

For Veterans, the website includes various resources including a job database and educational resources for private sector skills. Perhaps most important of all, however, the site includes a translator to decode the different lingo used to describe various military and civilian training and skills. This translator will ensure that Veterans know which of their military skills can translate into job search buzzwords for their cover letters and resumes.

For the employers on the other hand, the site allows access to Monster's 800,000+ veteran resumes, Monster’s 6Sense search technology, and job posting capabilities.

“Through the combined power of the organizations involved in this initiative, we hope to accelerate veterans’ transition to civilian life by providing access to thousands of employment opportunities across the technology sector and the tools and resources they need to succeed,” said Bobbie Kilberg, NVTC CEO.

Any career advisor would tell you that when searching for employment, it is often best to hedge your bets and look on various job boards. For Veterans, USTechVets.org looks like a great place to start. However, if you are looking for other boards might I suggest Linkedin, Indeed, and Engineering.com.
