What Does CAD Viewing Have to do with Environmental Data Management?

Imagine my surprise when I receive an email from a world leader in data management software for water, energy, and air quality.  This is not exactly my domain, nor did I instantly recognize how 3D CAD viewing, the subject of the email, was within their domain.  Curious, I dug deeper.

KISTERS North America is a developer of data management software: WISKI and Hydstra for water resource management, BelVis for energy market systems, ResOpt for resource optimization, and AquisNet for air quality management - products that are all foreign to me.  So why would a company renown for its data management software create a 3D CAD viewer?

First of all, 3D ViewStation is not just a 3D CAD viewer.  It is a robust viewer for 3D, both native and neutral formats, and for 2D office documents, scans, and drawings.

3D ViewStation boasts features like 3D viewing and markup, 2D viewing and markup, file comparison, animated and exploding views, dimensioning, measuring, and sectioning.  3D ViewStation comes in a formidable desktop version; an ActiveX component for integration into other enterprise systems, like PLM; a web viewer for browser-based viewing; and a server to automate translations and comparisons.  The list of supported CAD extensions is phenomenal.  But this still doesn't answer my question.  Why does a water, energy, and air data management company develop a CAD viewer?

To answer that, I had to look elsewhere.  It seems that a PLM vendor who recently released a product that approaches true cad-to-cad interoperability has integrated 3D ViewStation to its ARAS Innovator Application.  Now it makes sense.
