The courses appear to have the massive openness of MOOCs. At a cost of $1500 per year per user account, however, the price tag is much larger than your average MOOC, which are often free. With “skin in the game,” though, this may lead to higher completion rates and more certifications.
The courses will consist of student-paced modular lessons targeting various learning styles with voice-overs, demonstrations, lecture slides and quizzes. The lessons will even include embedded workshops which can tackle real world problems or simple case studies.
"There are as many learning styles as there are people, and we've built the MSC Learning Center to support all of them … Some people learn through hands-on practice and observing cause and effect. Some need to learn individually while others need a community setting of like-minded people brainstorming and trading ideas. The MSC Learning Center has options to help all of those people use our simulation technology to its full potential to create superior products," said Jeff Graff, e-learning VP for MSC Software.
Modules will build upon each other so expect a linear progression. However, the modules will focus on one topic or experience each.
Students will be able to take refreshers on topics as needed. To assist in the refresh and study process, modules will include a table of contents which will give users the ability to jump to specific points in the lesson.
Once a course is completed, students can opt into certification once they prove their knowledge in a summary exam. If students have questions on content, exams or anything else, they can ask subject matter experts on the fully integrated MSC User Community discussion board.
