Introducing 3D Printing and Robotics to the Next Generation

This March is Canada’s National Engineering Month. Joining in on the festivities is the Sheridan Engineering Association, who wish to showcase 3D printing and robotics to high school students.

The event, dubbed “Sheridan, Get Innovative”, will include students, parents, teachers and members of the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) Ontario section.

The event will be hosted by Professor Andy Alubaidy and Dr. Godfrey Onwubolu.

The first session will feature Prof. Alubaidy demonstrating how robots can be programmed to travel through a maze. Best of all, the robots will be built using Lego NXT Robots. This ensures that students can gain access to the robots at a price tag comparable to that of a gaming system.

Next, Dr. Onwubolu will show how 3D printing works and even allow students to design their own objects to be printed.

The event will close out with college students showing off their capstone projects. Some of these projects include automated packaging systems, paper cutters and color sorting robots.

The festivities are the brainchild of the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT). The organization hopes to inspire young students to consider the technician and technologist professions by outlining what college students can do. Winners will receive a prize of $2,500 and a free OACETT membership.

The event is sponsored by HalTech, the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at Sheridan, and OACETT.
