MathWorks releases MATLAB and Simulink 2014a

This week, MathWorks announced the release of the latest versions of MATLAB and Simulink. The release boasts some updates and bug fixes.

MATLAB is a programming platform for algorithm design, numeric computation, and data analysis or visualization.

“In MATLAB you can use the new pop up history window to view and re-run previous commands,” said Tim Gillis, MathWorks Release Manager in a video release. “You’ll also find support for mixed-integer linear programming, and fitting models to repeated measures data. For control design we’ve added online parameter estimation and the PID tuner app now lets you identify plant models from test data.”

Simulink on the other hand is a graphics platform for simulation, embedded systems and model-based design.

One addition to the program includes a redesigned diagnostic viewer. The information in the viewer can now be limited by filters or expanded to give users the diagnostic data from their past simulations. Additionally, MATLAB warnings are sent here instead of at the prompt window.

Gillis adds that, “In Simulink a new data dictionary lets you easily manage design data for your models.” The data dictionary will allow for data grouping, change tracking, comparisons and mergers.

In Simulink, “You can also generate interactive web views with rich content and Simulink report generator,” said Gillis. Rich text, images, tables, annotations and hyperlinks will additionally allow users to better document their modeling.

“This release also introduces Simulink Real-Time which combines the functionality of XPC target and XPC target embedded option. Instrument panels can now be created and run for real-time applications.”

Finally, LTE System Toolbox, a new product from MathWorks, provides engineers with a standard compliant reference for the use of physical layer simulation and testing.

Though these tools have a strong base in universities and schools, they have also found their way into aerospace, automotive, biotech/pharma, electronics, financial and other industries.
