Blackboard and Internet2’s Quest to Innovate Higher Education

Today, Blackboard Inc. announced they will join the Internet2 consortium, a collection of education leaders in industry working to bring innovation to higher education in the form of technology and networks.

Blackboard has already made a name for itself as the go-to-service for providing online education platforms to colleges and universities. The program frequently comes up in ENGINEERING.com’s research into Masters of Engineering Management (MEM) courses, such as at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln and the University of Louisville.

However, the new move will see the company work with Internet2 members to advance higher learning technologies and produce customizable solutions for campuses, students, administrators and instructors.

Blackboards’ technology will also be available to the Internet2 network. This will leverage the other software available to the consortium.

"I'm thrilled that Blackboard is joining this community of institutions, researchers, and thought leaders who are passionate about education,” said Blackboard Sr. VP, Mark Strassman. “We look forward to collaborating to mutually shape the future of technology and its potential to transform education. Being a part of the conversations happening in the Internet2 community will be another valuable resource to us as we continue to develop solutions that reimagine education."

The member-owned Internet2 community, containing mostly higher education institutions, was founded in 1996. Since then they have worked together to produce research, services and a platform for members to tackle current issues in the education community.

As education moves further online – through MOOCs, online degrees and online training – there will certainly be a few bumps along the way. Hopefully, though, organizations such as Internet2 will be there to identify and resolve any problems before they get out of hand.
