DARPA Seeks a Stealth Motorcycle

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) recently revealed its interest in developing a hybrid stealth motorcycle, funding a collaborative effort to develop the silent two-wheeler.

As instructed in the grant, Logos Technology will blend its multiple fuel, hybrid-electric power plant with San-Francisco-based BRD’s dirt-bike platform.  Once harmonized, the two systems will represent “the first time that a two-wheel-drive, multi-fuel hybrid capability has been integrated into a full-size off-road motorcycle," says Logos.

Elaborating on the design envisioned for DARPA’s stealth bike, Wade Pulliam, manager of advanced concepts at Logos Technologies stated, "Quieted, all-wheel-drive capability at extended range in a lightweight, rugged, single-track vehicle could support the successful operations of U.S. expeditionary and Special Forces in extreme terrain conditions and contested environments. With a growing need to operate small units far from logistical support, the military may increasingly rely on adaptable, efficient technologies like this hybrid-electric motorcycle."

Although the BRD-Logos project isn’t the only stealth bike in the works (a short range bike by Zero Motorcycles is also being developed), the new project would result in a bike that can venture far behind enemy lines, toggling between gas and electric power whenever needed.

In addition to its ability to spirit SEALs, Rangers and other special ops units behind enemy lines, the new bike’s hybrid system would also be capable of powering up ancillary hardware that’s critical for mission success.

As of this writing no date or unit price has been set for the delivery of DARPA’s stealth hybrid, however, given the fact that most of the fundamental technology underpinning the system is already available, I wouldn’t be surprised if these vehicles were ready for service in the very near future.
