LazeeEye - 3d scanning for your smartphone

Heuristic Labs wants to bring 3d scanning technology to your smartphone. Their Kickstarter campaign tells us the easiest way to do this is to treat your phone's camera like one eye, and add a laser illuminator to give your phone stereo vision.

The Kickstarter campaign showcases all the benefits of the LazeeEye. It's cheap, works with any iPhone or Android smartphone, and it's easy to use. Low price point is the benefit touted here - 3d camera phones might be on the technology horizon soon, but they're going to cost a lot more than the lowest pledge reward level.

Makers can purchase a $50 do-it-yourself kit while developers can purchase the $250 developer edition, complete with software development kit, API documentation and source code.

A large part of the campaign page is spent comparing LazeeEye to other laser scanning add-ons that are on the market or being developed. Heuristic says that it has a distinct advantage over these competitors on a line by line basis.

Several uses are shown in the video: 3d scans of people and rooms are performed, 3d measurements are taken from scans, pictures are modified in 3d, lighting and angle of photos are changed, and virtual furniture is rearranged in a virtual room.

LazeeEye looks great - the video cautions that these scanning effects aren't up to the level that production will hit. That should make the fully realized product even better. This is one of the highest funding goals I've seen and it will be interesting to follow the campaign and see if the entire $250,000 is raised.
