MSC Software’s Dytran Explicit Nonlinear FEA Helps Indian Register of Shipping Predict Responses of Ship Structures Subjected to Underwater Explosion

NEWPORT BEACH, CA.--(Business Wire – June 24, 2014) – MSC Software Corporation, a global leader in helping product manufacturers to advance their engineering methods with simulation software and services, today announced that Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), an internationally recognized independent ship classification society, has selected MSC Software’s Dytran explicit nonlinear simulation solution for underwater explosion analysis.

International waters are increasingly under threat thereby creating the need to protect high value naval and commercial vessels and more importantly human lives at sea. In particular, threat from low intensity to high intensity underwater explosion (also known as UNDEX) is of great concern and has catastrophic consequences on ship structures. Hence, the need to design the structure to withstand large shock loads that are generated as a result of UNDEX is of paramount importance. Engineers at IRS have chosen Dytran to simulate this phenomenon and gain early design insights into the performance of the ship structure.

To predict UNDEX effects is quite challenging and complex as the vessel can be subjected to different types of loading conditions. Depending on explosion charge size and its proximity to the ship structure, response can be significantly different. The sequence of events in underwater explosion consists of shock wave formation, gas bubble oscillation, bubble migration and finally collapse of gas bubble forming water jet. It is not feasible to practically test each scenario so engineers at IRS have turned to explicit nonlinear simulation to virtually validate UNDEX effects on the ship design. Accurately simulating UNDEX gives engineers considerable advantage to predict worst case scenarios and strengthen hot spots.

“IRS aims to act as a catalyst for the maritime industry to self-regulate and ensure safe ships. Dytran takes us one step closer to achieving this objective by allowing our engineers to virtually validate critical events such as underwater explosion,” said Dr. A. Samanta, Vice President, Research Division, Indian Register of Shipping. “Use of simulation is helping us to achieve higher levels of quality and reliability which is very crucial in this industry segment.”

“With maritime traffic set to increase, we see a growing partnership between the shipbuilding industry in India and MSC to deliver safer ships,” said Eric Favre, Vice President APAC, MSC Software. “I am very pleased that IRS, one of the most prestigious classification and certification agencies in the world, has adopted MSC’s simulation solutions to design and analyze critical events such as underwater explosion.”

About Indian Register of Shipping

Founded in India in 1975, Indian Register of Shipping is an elite, internationally recognized, independent ship classification society. It is a member of the prestigious 12 member International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). Today, IRS acts on behalf of the Maritime Administration of the Indian government for final assignment of Load Lines in Indian flag vessels and also as the security organization that determines compliance under the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) code for Indian flag ships and port facilities. IRS provides professionally competent, independent and highly efficient third party technical inspection and certification services for all types of ships, marine craft and structures. These services have also been expanded to cover a range of offshore and industrial projects. The services are designed to meet ISO 9001 specifications (the International Standard on Quality Management Systems), and thereby help achieve high levels of quality and reliability, while maintaining project schedules and integrity. Further, they are proven to be cost-effective and meet timelines efficiently. For additional information about IRS, please visit: www.irclass.org
