Dell Increases Data Protection and Backup

Dell Software has just announced two new backup appliances and enhancements to their AppAssure backup / recovery software. In summary, the new releases include:

  • The AppAssure powered Dell DL1000 which is best equipped for managed service providers, small-, and medium-sized businesses.
  • The Dell DR2000v software-based virtual deduplication appliance. It is best suited for remote offices and branch offices (ROBO).
  • The addition of cloud access management, archive-to-cloud, and expanded virtual machine support to the AppAssure data protection software

These solutions will give Dell customers flexibility and versatility when protecting data and applications across virtual, physical, or cloud environments. These products will help to minimizing downtime, data loss, costs and complexity of the backup system.

Additionally, Dell has announced that all DR series appliances will have cascaded replication and replication seeding capabilities. These will allow customers to backup data at a remote site and reduce the time to create disaster recovery site.

Product breakdown

Dell DL1000:

  • Designed for smaller digital environments
  • Combines Dell’s PowerEdge servers with AppAssure data protection software
  • Near-continuous data protection (60 minute snapshots) when used with a Dell PowerEdge R220 server with AppAssure already installed
  • Can use AppAssure’s changed data tracking to only backup/move data that has changed
  • Cloud connector for AppAssure archives (includes Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure, RackSpace, and OpenStack)
  • 2 - 3 TB of usable capacity
  • 3TB version can utilize two Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machine licenses
  • $4,300 for 2TB of capacity, $6,000 for 3TB of capacity, and $8,300 for 3TB of capacity with two Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machine licenses

Dell DR2000v:

  • Virtual appliance designed for ROBO settings
  • Runs within a virtual machine over a hypervisor server
  • Works in conjunction with physical Dell DR appliance
  • Back up ROBO and send data to a central office
  • Supports a various backup software applications (NetVault Backup, vRanger, VMware ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisors
  • Decreases data volume from backups up to 15:1
  • Available 1, 2 or 4TBs
  • Pricing for the DR2000v starts $4,200 for 1TB of capacity, $7,500 for 2TB, and $13,500 for 4TB.

AppAssure 5.4.2:

  • Cloud access management improvements for account management this also allows a user’s cloud act as an archive target
  • Cloud archive import/export increases the cloud storage targets (including Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure, Rackspace and OpenStack-based platforms)
  • Scheduled and incremental archive allows for recurring scheduled archives (daily, weekly, or monthly basis) or update incremental changes instead of needing full archives
  • Expanded platform support for Hyper-V Generation 2 Virtual Machines, VMware VM Hardware version 10
  • FIPS 140-2 Certification for government-certified encryption
