S. Korea to Promote 3D Printing as Economic Driver

The South Korean government is promoting integration of 3D printing with Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data as well as the e-commerce. It plans to take advantage of Korea’s excellent ICT infrastructure to build the Korean 3D printing environment in order to create quality jobs and next generation growth engines.

Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning, and Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced 3D printing industry development strategy at the 3D printing product demonstration and policy debate co-hosted by Electronic Times, Electronic Times Internet and National Assemblymen of Jeong Gap-yong, Baek Jae-hyeon, and Kwon Eun-hui. The both ministries had collaborated in establishment of ‘3D Printing Industry Development Strategy’ last April and the strategies were further refined in the announcement.

Choi Seong-ho, a manager in charge of coordinating of policies from Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning, said, “We will provide the opportunity to leap forward to intelligent society through intelligent 3D printing industry,” during the announcement made in ‘Promoting 3D Printing Industry as Future Strategic Industry.’ Mr. Choi set the current personalized 3D printing production structure as 3D Printing Industry Version 1.0 and announced the service will be expanded to ‘Remote Order-based Production (2.0)’ and ‘Intelligence Integrated Service (3.0)’ that is integrated with IoT.

Remote Order-based Production which will be further refined in the next 2 years will promote the printing services for people so they can easily purchase and use 3D-printing design drawings made by others through e-commerce. According to him, integration with IoT will implement intelligent 3D printing environment which enables creation of the 3D object by remote voice command from smart devices. He said, “3D printing will initially be disseminated for industrial purposes but subsequently will be integrated with IoT, Big Data, Cloud, etc. so that individual users will use the service.

In the announcement made by Kang Hyuk-gi, a manager of Electrical Engineering department, in ‘Supporting Direction for Promotion of 3D Printing Industry’, introduced the next generation materials technology development program integrated with equipment. Starting from next year the government plans to spend the budget of approx. 1 billion won to pursue an integrated production of the materials and equipment (3D printer) befitting the domestic situation. He took for example Super-Size 3D Printer Technology and development of high quality alloy powder materials for production for the Titanium (Ti) Alloy Structure.

Kang Min-su, CEO of KwangGaeTo Lab, commented “In the next 3 to 5 years most of current 3D printing essential patents will expire, however, threats from infringements of new patents, and improvement (around) patents still exist. Patent application status of major 3D printing companies should be monitored.”

In this event nearly twenty national assemblymen visited the demonstration venue making the subject a true issue of concern. Vice speaker, Jeong Gap-yoon, said, “US is giving a full-fledged supports for the industry at the governmental level and Europe, Japan, and China are also investing an astronomical amount of money to catch up with the most up-to-date technologies” and added with confidence, “With our world’s best IT infrastructure and excellent human resources we can step up to be in the leading position in the 3D printing industry.” A national assemblyman Baek Jae-hyun commented, “3D printing industry, which is currently an unexplored field, will create jobs and businesses.” And showing an active interest, a national assemblyman Kwon Eun-hee said, “Upgrade of our industry standard depends on development of 3D printing industry.”
