With the often vague and simplified classroom examples, it is hard to understand how to fit MapleSim’s simulation and symbolic modeling into the real-world. This is where demonstrations of the ability of MapleSim to model, simulate and connect hard is crucial to the students. Learning these features can significantly improve student design projects, course understanding, and competition placements (such as Formula SAE). This should translate to a better engineer once the student starts on their career.
Bonnie Yue, an Application Engineer at Maplesoft said, “As the top priority becomes passing a course, students learn how to solve simplified problems. But, the connection between these simplified problems and the real systems is often lost. Clearly there is some disconnect … [MapleSim] can provide computational tools to engage and enrich student education with the goal of minimizing this disconnect.”
MapleSim will give students the opportunity to explore pre-build models. This will allow students to explore the interface, reverse-engineer the system, and gain some intuition on the real-world models.
“What’s also very crucial,” added You, “is understanding the importance of equations. Why am I learning how to solve these sets of equations and when will I ever use them? Well everywhere, and all the time. Students can see that in MapleSim.” Using MapleSim’s ability to represent equations in symbolic form as opposed to computer code can help students recognize the equations in class as the equations in the simulation.
The presentation is hosted by SAE international, a global engineer association. SAE International’s goals are to promote life learning for the engineering profession.
