Engineering School Marks 25th Anniversary of Deadly Shooting

On December 6th, 1989, a gunmen shot down 14 female students and staff at École Polytechnique de Montréal. Most of those lost or injured were from the University's Engineering department.

Polytechnique is commemorating the 25th anniversary of this Montréal Massacre by creating a non-profit foundation. The organization will gather funds that will be spent on encouraging young girls into a STEM career path.

The funds collected will be passed onto Folie Technique, a science day camp organized by Polytechnique. These funds will give the school the opportunity to offer the camp experience to more girls from less affluent communities.

Folie Technique Director, Marie-Claude Hamel, said “Confidence in their own abilities to succeed in science is often more fragile among girls and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds ... We promote a positive attitude among girls toward these fields and sufficient self-confidence for them to consider a career in science and engineering one day. These young people are also the future that is blooming.”

Additionally, the school has marked the day with the announcement of an "Order of the White Rose" scholarship worth $30,000. The scholarship is in tribute to the victims of the tragedy. The scholarship will be passed onto a female engineering student that wishes to go onto a masters or doctoral program around the world. For more information follow orderwhiterose.org.

Finally, Polytechnique will have a  ceremony to lay 14 white roses, one for each fatality.  The ceremony was held on December 6th 2014 at 13:00.
