How Focused are You in Your Career?

I had the opportunity to participate in Tony Robbins’ Unleash the Power Within seminar this past weekend. It was an awesome experience, especially the Firewalk. That’s right; I walked barefoot over 15 ft of 2000 degree hot coals, crazy I know! Tony Robbins was adamant in saying that the Firewalk is not about the Firewalk, it is about the ability to change your “state” at anytime. Often, at “good” times in our life or career, we are in a certain state, while we tend to be in another state during “bad” times.

The ability to put ourselves into the “good” state at any moment in time is priceless. I can’t explain 4 days of Tony Robbins training in one blog post, nor do I want to, for those of you who plan on attending one day. However, what I will tell you is that Tony says the 2 most important aspects of controlling your state are your focus and your physiology. With all of the distractions in the workplace today it’s very easy to lose focus, especially when it comes to your career goals and career advancement. If you have lost focus, take some quiet time to think about where your career is headed. Re-focus and put together a plan to help you get from where you are to where you want to be. Once you gain that focus, do everything in your power to keep it and use it to effectively achieve your goals.

As far as your physiology goes, just think about it, when we are having a bad day or get into a situation that upsets us, we tend to show it in our appearance. We either have a frown on our face or we find ourselves slouching over, we also might walk or talk a little slower. Simply changing your physiology by lifting your shoulders and smiling can put you in a better state and increase your chances for success in that moment. Tony says to imagine there is a string attached your chest and someone is pulling it up towards the sky. In addition to simply your posture and your physical motions, keeping yourself in shape physically will contribute tremendously to your success. Your energy will increase and you can reduce the stress you may have built up during the workday. Yes, working out takes time, but often times the increase in energy you experience will allow you to increase productivity. It’s amazing how much physiology can impact your overall outlook and growth!

From here on out, in your day to day career and personal activities, maintain your focus and take pride in your body. You won’t be sorry you did!

Please share any experiences you may have had where you improved your focus, your physical fitness or both and it impacted your career development.
