MeshGems 2.0 Adds Parallel Tet and Mixed Element Volume Meshes


MG-Tetra-HPC is able to generate a 1 billion tet mesh 17.5 times faster.
The newest release of MeshGems 2.0 is now available. The release’s enhancements include boundary layer generation and meshing improvements with respect to distributed parallel performance.

MeshGems is an automatic mesh generation software which assists the development of CAD/CAE applications. The generated meshes are suitable for various physics including CFD, electro-magnetics and FEA.

The self-contained and tailored application can be integrated into third party software using API. Currently, MeshGems components are integrated into various simulation software including: Patran, SimXpert, ANSYS, Marc, Simulia/ABAQUS, Pro/E, FEMAP, I-Deas and LS-DYNA.

The new release comes with two new products, MG-Tetra-HPC and MG-Hybrid.

MG-Tetra-HPC will create tetrahedral (tet) volume meshes with the use of parallel computing. By increasing the number of threads from one to 128, MG-Tetra-HPC is able to generate a 1 billion tet mesh 17.5 times faster.

The new tet mesh generation product will obey all the basic principles of the original MG-Tetra. For example, the volume meshing will not alter the surface mesh, mesh entities can be enforced and it is possible to mesh cavities.

As for MG-Hybrid, the product makes it possible to generate a hybrid volume mesh conformal to the input triangle/quadrangle surface mesh. This process includes boundary layers, advanced extrusion, the transition layer and the ability to fill the core with tetrahedral or hexahedral elements.

Other advancements in MeshGems 2.0 include:

  • A common workflow for surface meshing of discrete geometries (for CAD, STL or Mesh data)
  • Driving element generation type on CAD-patch per Cad-patch basis
  • Improved algorithms for automatic geometry correction
  • Partial support of required entities to ensure some entities are constant
  • New boundary regeneration algorithm for MG-Tetra
  • Mesh generation speed of MG-Tetra improved for large meshes
  • Quality/aspect ratio of mesh improved

With all the CAE software companies integrating MeshGems into their systems, it will be interesting to see how these improvements will trickle down to the other providers. Additionally, with packages like MeshGems making automatic meshing easier, as well as simulation appearing earlier in the design cycle, it makes one wonder how Analysts will need to adapt in the changing market.
