How Engineering Students Can Gain a Foothold In Formula One

For young engineers dreaming of entering Formula One, a big door just opened at the Infiniti Performance Engineering Academy. In its second year of operation, the Academy is searching for the best up-and-coming engineering undergraduates.

The cream of the crop will have the opportunity to join the four-time World Champion team, Infiniti Red Bull Racing, or the Infinity Motor Company. US applicants have an advantage too, as one placement is guaranteed to be from the States. Last year’s pilot run of the academy found two candidates from the US and one from a pool of global applicants.

“In an industry that is notoriously difficult to get into, this is an unprecedented chance for talented young engineers," said Allyson Witherspoon, Marketing Director at Infiniti USA.

This year’s comprehensive assessment program, however, will be looking at recruits from the Americas, Europe, Russia, China and Saudi Arabia. The applicants will be tested in a 12-month paid internship program split between the close-knit racing team and Infiniti’s European Technical Center. These UK-based internships will focus on road car engineering projects.

The Academy will fill five roles that focus on vehicle design, dynamics, aerodynamics, and electronics—so applicants should have academic knowledge in these disciplines. Applicants will also want to be knowledgeable in performance and hybrid technology.

"We're looking for engineers who are technically very strong, but they need to excel in other areas too," said Adrian Newey, CTO Infiniti Red Bull Racing. "Whether you're designing and building road cars or working in Formula One, the ability to think laterally, creatively and operate seamlessly within a team are crucial. It will be tough and they will be expected to work, but the rewards are high."

Candidates will first need to submit a resume and video explaining why they deserve the placement. For the next stage candidates will undergo a Skype interview and a senior management review. A total of ten candidates in each market will attend the finials, where they will be tested on engineering tasks and judged by the racing team and Infiniti engineers. One winner from each region will then be selected for the 12-month internship.

Good luck.
